Container Loading Math for Hand Tool Imports: 10 Products, Two Container Types

We ran the catalog's carton data through 20GP and 40HQ stowage math: which products hit the weight ceiling, which hit the volume ceiling, and how a mixed container adds up.

Why carton math beats guesswork

Every tool carton ships with three published numbers: pieces per carton, carton volume in cubic meters, and gross weight. Importers who run those three numbers against a container before booking avoid the two classic surprises - paying for space a weight-bound load never fills, or discovering a volume-bound load overflowed at the loading dock. This guide takes ten real product lines from the JX hand tools catalog and works them through standard 20GP and 40HQ dry container limits.

Method: two constraints, one conservative factor

Industry-standard dry containers are the starting point: a 20GP has roughly 33.2 cubic meters of internal volume and a 40HQ roughly 76.4 cubic meters. Typical payload allowances are about 28,000 kg for a 20GP and about 26,500 kg for a 40HQ - actual figures vary with container tare, carrier and road limits, so confirm them before booking. In practice 10-15 percent of the geometric volume is lost to stowage inefficiency, so this analysis plans with 85 percent of internal volume. For every product line we then take the lower of two ceilings: how many cartons fit by volume, and how many fit by payload. The lower number is the loading decision, and the binding constraint is the number worth negotiating.

The loading table: ten catalog products

Each line below uses one representative size per product, exactly as the catalog publishes the carton data:
JX-02S-5025 steel tape, 5 m - catalog carton 0.0346 m3 / 29.50 kg, 120 pcs -> 20GP: 815 cartons (volume-bound); 40HQ: 898 cartons (weight-bound)
JX-872 claw hammer, 8 oz / 250 g - catalog carton 0.0275 m3 / 21.00 kg, 48 pcs -> 20GP: 1,026 cartons (volume-bound); 40HQ: 1,261 cartons (weight-bound)
JX-504 S2 ball-end hex key set - catalog carton 0.0580 m3 / 28.30 kg, 72 pcs -> 20GP: 486 cartons (volume-bound); 40HQ: 936 cartons (weight-bound)
JX-901 hand riveter - catalog carton 0.0555 m3 / 26.00 kg, 40 pcs -> 20GP: 508 cartons (volume-bound); 40HQ: 1,019 cartons (weight-bound)
JX-101 combination plier, 6 in / 150 mm - catalog carton 0.0454 m3 / 23.05 kg, 90 pcs -> 20GP: 621 cartons (volume-bound); 40HQ: 1,149 cartons (weight-bound)
JX-121 multi-functional wire plier, 225 mm - catalog carton 0.0400 m3 / 25.10 kg, 60 pcs -> 20GP: 705 cartons (volume-bound); 40HQ: 1,055 cartons (weight-bound)
JX-628 S2 screwdriver, 5 x 100 mm - catalog carton 0.0466 m3 / 25.10 kg, 360 pcs -> 20GP: 605 cartons (volume-bound); 40HQ: 1,055 cartons (weight-bound)
JX-638 tester screwdriver, 3 x 67 mm - catalog carton 0.0400 m3 / 16.60 kg, 480 pcs -> 20GP: 705 cartons (volume-bound); 40HQ: 1,596 cartons (weight-bound)
JX-661 soldering iron, 40 W - catalog carton 0.0796 m3 / 13.80 kg, 100 pcs -> 20GP: 354 cartons (volume-bound); 40HQ: 815 cartons (volume-bound)
JX-400 PVC pipe cutter, 37 mm - catalog carton 0.0503 m3 / 14.65 kg, 72 pcs -> 20GP: 561 cartons (volume-bound); 40HQ: 1,291 cartons (volume-bound)

What the data shows

Three patterns matter for planning. First, on a 20GP every one of these ten lines is volume-bound: the 28-tonne payload is generous relative to 33.2 cubic meters of space, so you run out of room before you run out of weight. On a 40HQ the picture inverts - eight of the ten lines become weight-bound, with the payload ceiling arriving anywhere from about half to nearly all of the volume filled, depending on carton density. Second, product density decides the container type: the mid-density lines such as hex key sets, riveters and pliers reach the 40HQ payload ceiling at 80 to 90 percent of the volume used, while the densest cartons - tape measures and hammers - stop on weight with roughly half to two-thirds of the volume filled, and the bulky, light lines like the soldering iron and the 37 mm pipe cutter stay volume-bound in both container types. Third, the practical flip point sits at roughly 400 kilograms per cubic meter of carton density - above that, plan 40HQ payload first; below it, plan volume first.

Pieces per container: three examples

A 40HQ of JX-638 tester screwdrivers is weight-bound at 1,596 cartons of 480 pieces - about 766,080 pieces with roughly 98 percent of the volume filled. The same container of 5 m steel tapes stops on weight at 898 cartons of 120 pieces, about 107,760 pieces, with over half the box still nominally free. A single 20GP of 8 oz hammers, by contrast, fills 1,026 cartons of 48 pieces on volume alone.

A worked mixed container

Mixed orders are where the two ceilings interact. One realistic 40HQ plan - a dense tape-and-hammer base plus space for bulkier pliers and irons:
JX-02S-5025 steel tape: 300 cartons = 10.38 m3, 8,850 kg
JX-872 16 oz / 500 g: 300 cartons = 10.20 m3, 8,100 kg
JX-121 wire plier: 250 cartons = 10.00 m3, 6,275 kg
JX-661 40 W: 150 cartons = 11.94 m3, 2,070 kg
That is 1,000 cartons, 42.5 m3 of the roughly 64.9 m3 usable volume, and 25,295 kg against the 26,500 kg planning payload - a mix that stops on weight, not space, which is exactly what a freight-forwarder-friendly dense range should do.

Before you book: five checks

1) Confirm the carrier's actual payload allowance for the box and route, including road weight limits at destination. 2) Decide palletized versus loose cartons before quoting: pallets consume volume and add tare weight. 3) Re-check the carton volume and gross weight on your current packing list - catalog data shifts when models change. 4) For dense ranges, ask the factory to ship the heaviest cartons at floor level and lighter cartons on top. 5) Send the factory your target container plan before production, so cartons and master cartons are labeled for the load sequence.
