Measuring Tape Buying Guide: Blade Steel, Locks and Casing
Three lines on a tape spec sheet decide the product: spring width, blade steel and how the lock button is made. How to read them - and use carton data to compare quotes.

Read a tape quote in three lines
Tape quotes look identical until you line up three specifications. First the return spring: its width and material decide whether the blade retracts evenly or slaps back - and spring width is the cheapest place for a factory to cut cost, so ask for the millimetres in writing. Second the blade steel and its coating grade, which decide whether the markings stay readable after real use. Third the casing: whether the lock button is moulded into the shell or added as a separate part.
Spring, blade, button - what each spec means
On the KK02S-5025 the spring is 65 mm spring steel - a figure to compare width-for-width against any quote at the same 5 m length. The blade is high wear-resisting steel. The shell is ABS with the lock button moulded in rather than glued on, so the button survives drops that pop an added part loose. These three lines are the whole quality story of a plain tape; anything else on the sheet is finish.
Plain version or feature version
Tapes come in plain and feature variants - magnetic hook, auto-lock, blade brake. The comparison dimension for a range is what the feature costs against how often the market uses it: a plain 5 m tape like this one is the volume reference point, and feature versions are judged as mark-ups against it. Specifying the plain version first gives the quote comparison a stable baseline.
Turning carton data into comparable quotes
The packing line is where quotes become comparable. This tape packs 120 pcs per carton at 0.0346 m3 and 29.5 kg gross - so per thousand tapes a buyer moves just over eight cartons, 246 kg and 0.29 m3. Running that same arithmetic on every quote exposes the real differences: two tapes at the same piece price are not the same landed cost if one packs 100 to a carton. Ask every supplier for pcs-per-carton, volume and gross weight, and normalise the freight per thousand pieces before comparing.
